From his early days as a student leader to his remarkable career in law, academia, and politics, Dr. Basiru’s journey reflects the aspirations of a true son of Osun.
Distinguished Senator Dr. Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru (SRJ) was Born and raised in Osogbo, the heart of Osun State, the state of the living spring. His journey from humble beginnings in Osogbo to becoming a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and governance embodies the spirit of Osun. Dr. Basiru’s life and career represent a blend of academic brilliance, legal expertise, and an unwavering commitment to public service.
Dr. Basiru began his early education at Salvation Army Primary School, Oke-Fia, Osogbo and later attended Laro Grammar School, Oke-fia, Osogbo where his leadership potential was evident from his days as a student. He served as a student leader during his time at the University of Ilorin, where his passion for justice and equality began to take shape. Later, he continued his academic pursuit at the University of Lagos, where he excelled and earned his LLB, LLM, and PhD in Law. These achievements not only showcased his intellectual prowess but also set the stage for his impactful career in law, academia, and governance.
A Scholar and Mentor
Before venturing into politics, Dr. Basiru dedicated a part of his career to academia. He briefly served as a lecturer at Osun State University, where he inspired and mentored young minds. His role as a scholar went beyond teaching; it reflected his belief in the transformative power of education and its ability to shape future leaders. Even in politics, his scholarly background continues to inform his approach to governance, policy-making, and legal reform.
Trailblazer in Politics and Governance
Dr. Basiru’s transition into politics was driven by a desire to bring about meaningful change. As the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Osun State, he championed reforms that strengthened the state’s judicial system and ensured fairness and equity. His tenure was marked by a commitment to upholding the rule of law and creating a foundation for good governance.
In 2019, Dr. Basiru’s dedication to public service earned him a seat in the Senate, where he represented Osun Central Senatorial District. His time in the National Assembly was distinguished by his contributions to legislative debates, sponsorship of critical bills, and advocacy for policies that promoted development and progress in Osun and across Nigeria.
National Leadership and Recent Appointments
Dr. Basiru’s remarkable leadership qualities have been recognized at the national level. As the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he has played a pivotal role in shaping the direction of the party, fostering unity, and ensuring its growth at home and in the diaspora. Recently, Dr. Basiru was appointed as the Chairman of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), a critical position in Nigeria’s quest for economic diversification and industrial growth. In this role, he is poised to drive the revitalization of the sugar industry, creating jobs, boosting local production, and reducing the nation’s reliance on imports.
